Markus Weissenberger, PhD / Chief Technology Officer

Markus has over 20 years of international research and development experience with renowned research facilities and diverse industrial fields. He holds a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Potsdam/Germany and executed his research work at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam/Germany. Markus has a profound working knowledge of the oil and gas industry encompassing fracturing, cementing, heavy oil recovery and chemistry. An active SPE member, Markus maintains a working knowledge of all applicable chemistry in Fluids industry. During his last position Markus was the lead of a stimulation R&D group of an international Oil & Gas service provider. Markus has extensive experience in international commercialization of new completion and production chemistry working closely with engineering, marketing and sales. Markus brings substantial experience and technical support for sales and marketing, product development and IP generation. Markus has co-authored many oil and gas chemical patents.

Alejandra Enriquez, PhD / Lab Manager

Alejandra has over 5 years of experience in chemical development and analytical techniques. Alejandra holds a Ph.D. in Bioinorganic Chemistry from the University of Calgary. During her academic endeavours, Alejandra gained extensive knowledge on biochemical methods, specializing in a wide range of characterization techniques to elucidate the reactivity and structure of different chemicals, from reaction catalysts to pharmaceuticals leads. Alejandra has had a very fruitful academic career that has resulted in the publication of 8 peer-reviewed manuscripts and her attendance to numerous national and international conferences.

Elsayed R. Abdelfatah, PhD / Interface & Colloid Science Specialist

Elsayed has several years of international research and development experience in the area of complex fluids, supercritical carbon dioxide, surfactants, ionic liquids, rheology, and nanoparticles and also computational fluid dynamics and data analysis. Elsayed has substantial experience in the synthesis of task-specific nanoparticles and green ionic liquids, and developing cutting-edge chemical formulations. Elsayed is also an expert in high-pressure high-temperature coreflooding, numerical and mathematical modeling of fluids and colloids flow in porous media. Elsayed has good experience in coding with different programming languages. Before joining Fluid, Elsayed has supported and engaged with multiple technology companies in Canada and the Middle East.

Elsayed holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma in the area of “Nanotechnology and Colloidal Gels” using both experimental and computational fluid dynamics methods where he developed a pH-responsive nanoparticle-based gel for acid diversion in carbonate oil reservoirs. Before that, Elsayed earned M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering from Suez University. Elsayed has several peer-reviewed articles and multiple patent applications for Nanotechnology and Ionic Liquids applications.

Elsayed is Fluid's subject matter expert in the area of surfactants and colloids working to improve the current line of products while developing new cutting-edge products that meet the market challenges and customers' needs. The key drive of his research is improving the efficiency and sustainability of the energy and chemical industry.

Alexandra Ostaszewski, PhD / Scientist Microbiology

Alexandra holds a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Calgary where she specialized in Molecular Microbiology. During her academic pursuits, she used a combination of chemical genetics, transcriptomics and protein biochemistry to characterize intrinsic mechanisms of bacterial resistance to biocides in clinical settings. Alexandra has co-authored several peer-reviewed articles and presented at/attended multiple national and international conferences.

Nikita Chkolny, BSc / Team Lead, Energy Division

Nikita Chkolny obtained his Bachelor of Science from the University of Calgary in 2012 in Natural Science concentrating in Chemistry and Biology. He currently has over 9 years of industry experience developing chemical technologies for several of the largest pressure pumping service providers in Canada. Throughout his career, he has gained experience developing technologies in hydraulic fracturing systems, acidizing, primary/secondary cementing and coiled tubing operations. His oil and gas experience extends to working in various roles including engineering and stimulation design, research and development, and field operations in both hydraulic fracturing and coiled tubing. Since joining Fluid Energy in 2020, he has used his expertise to lead the Oil and Gas laboratory team to continue to develop industry leading chemical solutions throughout the energy sector.


Karl Dawson, PhD / Technology Division Manager

Karl has over 13 years of experience in materials development, analytical chemistry, and quality initiatives. Karl holds a Ph.D. in Materials Chemistry from the University of Calgary, and during his academic pursuits he gained experience in multiple disciplines including, but not limited to, pharmaceuticals, nanoscale pigments, and metal-organic hybrid materials. Karl began his career in the analytical and R&D group of an International Oil & Gas services provider focusing on novel cementing and ancillary technologies, and then transitioned to an internationally-recognized third-party testing laboratory where, in addition to handling client accounts and testing protocols, he oversaw the ISO 17025 QA/QC program, while overseeing a team of scientists and technicians. Throughout his career, Karl has also been the co-author of several peer-reviewed journal publications, as well as being a co-author of 10 patents. Karl’s breadth of experience will ensure Fluid® continues to build on its world class portfolio of patents, expand its innovative product offerings and technical support capabilities, and help ensure the high level of quality expected in Fluid’s product portfolio.

Marsha Bures, MSc / GMP Compliance Manager and Interim Quality Assurance Manager - QAP

Marsha has over 20 years of experience in analytical chemistry, quality assurance, and quality control in research, regulatory, and the private sector. Marsha achieved her undergrad in Chemistry from the University of Alberta and holds an MSc. in Analytical Chemistry as well as a Post-Graduate Certificate in Regulatory Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Marsha devoted a substantial portion of her career to ensuring the safety of our domestic food supply while working for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in an ISO 17025-CAN-P-1595 laboratory. She performed analytical testing methodology of trace and ultra-trace analyses of chemical contaminants, chemical residues, pesticides, dioxins, and PCBs as well as method development and validation protocols for programs and new projects.

Throughout her career she has held roles of increasing responsibility across multiple industries such as in agriculture and agri-food, blood banking, narcotics control, pharmaceuticals, regulatory food research, cannabis, and cosmetics. With both LEAN Six Sigma and ISO17025 Auditor Training accreditations, Marsha has been instrumental in the establishment and management of Quality Management Systems to achieve GMP, GLP, GPP, HACCP, Halal, and Kosher standards and certifications.

Adrienne Lee, BSc / Assistant GMP Compliance Manager

Adrienne has over 13 years of experience in analytical chemistry and QA/QC. Born and raised in Calgary, she has a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in chemistry from the University of Calgary. Adrienne has operated, calibrated, and maintained various laboratory analytical instruments including: FTIR, gas chromatography, and ICP emission spectrometry. In addition, she has received training in ISO 17025 in Sacramento, California. She has been heavily involved in developing the QA/QC program at each company. During her previous position, she worked alongside the stimulation R&D group of an international Oil & Gas service provider. Adrienne developed methods and evaluated products for fracturing and cementing applications and have co-authored a scientific publication for the Society of Petroleum Engineers in 2015. She has co-authored several patents during her tenure at Fluid Energy.

Jessica Hersey BSc / Assistant Lab Manager GMP QC

Jessica has over 13 years of experience in analytical chemistry, working in environmental and oil and gas laboratories.  Jessica holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Calgary. Jessica began her career in the environmental sector focusing on soil chemistry and later transitioning into inorganics. She helped execute the quality program to maintain ISO 17025 certification. This experience gave her an opportunity to shift to the oil and gas sector. Jessica worked her way up the ladder from lab technician, to lab supervisor, to analytical lab manager, overseeing other Chemists and Chemical Technologists who help service sites across Canada. She was responsible for timely determination and accuracy of laboratory results. Throughout her oil and gas career, Jessica has been involved in training and mentoring account managers and scientists, implementation, and execution of the Safety Champion Program, which was a driving factor in obtaining her certificate in Occupational Health and Safety from the University of New Brunswick.
Jessica's experience and drive will ensure a high level of quality and a high level of safety is maintained at all times.


Kyle Wynnyk, PhD / Assistant Lab Manager R&D

Kyle holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Calgary where he studied physical chemistry, specifically adsorption processes. In attaining his Ph.D. Kyle gained experience in wide-variety of subjects and skills, examples include: closed-form iterative chemical calculations and commissioning instrumentation (development/calibration/modification/programming). Throughout his career, Kyle has co-authored multiple peer-reviewed journal articles, presented at numerous international/national conferences, and has been a co-author of several patents.

Markus Pagels, PhD / Principal Research Scientist

Markus has over 20 years of international R&D experience in material science, analytical chemistry and reservoir characterization. He holds a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Freiburg/Germany and performed his doctoral research at the renowned Freiburg Materials Research Center on intrinsically conducting polymers. Prior to joining Fluid Energy Group, Markus has worked for almost 17 years in various positions in R&D, innovation, project management and customer engagement in Europe and North America for a major oilfield service provider. He developed a deep working knowledge of oilfield chemistry and core analysis. Markus authored a multitude of peer-reviewed scientific articles and holds many patents to his name. He is an active member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the German Chemical Society.

Matthew DeWit, PhD / Research Scientist

Matthew DeWit is a research chemist with seven years of industry experience who works with SixRing to develop new technology in order to both generate new intellectual property and commercialize new products and materials.

Matthew believes that this work is very important in ensuring long term growth and stability for the company, as the commercialization will bring new, diverse and sustainable markets to the company, and developing and protecting new intellectual property protects company interests and helps prevent or reduce direct competition to our processes and products. 

During his academic pursuits Matthew gained experience in the fields of organic, polymer, and organometallic chemistry, during which time he co-authored several peer-reviewed publications. Matthew began his career in the oil and gas industry, where he focused on the development of new drilling fluid products and systems, helping to commercialize several new products and develop standardized testing procedures for new product evaluations. Since joining SixRing he has helped substantiate three previously filed patents and generate five additional ones.

Matthew holds a Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry from the University of Western Ontario.

Emhemmed Youssef, PhD, PEng / Senior Process Engineer

Emhemmed has over 16 years of experience in project/process design, petrochemicals, refining experience and is leading the development of SixRing novel process technology from laboratory scale into commercialization through collaborative efforts with technology, operation, R&D departments.

Emhemmed holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Western University and during his academic pursuits he gained experience in disciplines including, but not limited to, green process engineering, process design and development, renewable and sustainable Hydrogen, Bio-Oil, and Bio-Char production from waste streams. 

Emhemmed has published several scientific papers and a book chapter in the Handbook of Hydrogen Energy. Throughout his academic and industrial terms, Emhemmed demonstrated strong technical thought leadership skills, business acumen, and sound understanding of economic and energy markets.

Emhemmed's vision and goal is to translate Fluid's world class portfolio of patents to commercial scale processes, build an engineering team that is capable to help Fluid expand its innovative product offerings and technical support capabilities, and help ensure the high level of quality expected in Fluid’s product portfolio.

Genaro Gelves, PhD / Senior Business Development Specialist

Genaro has over 14 years of combined academic and industry professional experience. Genaro holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry (Materials) from the University of Alberta in Edmonton and a Master in Metallurgical Engineering from the Industrial of Santander University, Colombia. He was awarded a Fellowship of the Government of Japan for an International Industry Training on Materials. Genaro has expertise in advanced materials, nanotechnology, polymer nanocomposites, and hydrometallurgy. His most recent experience includes his work at a global multinational innovative conglomerate in the materials and manufacturing sector where he transitioned from a product development role to a technical business development role supporting business growth activities of the corporation in strategic markets related to Oil and Gas, Advanced Materials, Separations and Purification, Commercial Solutions, and Aerospace. Throughout his career, Genaro has been a coauthor of more than 20 peer-reviewed publications and 3 patent applications. Genaro’s technical background and industry experience will surely contribute to further advance the success of Fluid and its subsidiaries.

Andrew Corbett, BSc / Research Chemist

Andrew is relatively new to the chemical research industry, graduating in 2019. At Queen's University Andrew achieved his molecular biology minor, as well as his chemistry honors degree, granted for his research into biological value-added chemicals derived from algae. Andrew has also maneuvered around  the scientific community laboratories, from purifying proteins and replicating DNA to conducting bacterial toxin research for AHS' Provincial Lab. Starting in quality control and regulations for Fluid Energy Group, Andrew quickly shifted to focus in research and development, including equipment analysis of new techniques and products; a skill which he now brings to Fluid's SixRing division.
